- Organizers of the protests, have called the protests “demonstrations by Gen Z”, driven by young people’s frustration with the government’s lack of action in tackling corruption and boosting economic opportunities.
- The protest was intended, first and foremost, against the rampant corruption in government, one protester said in an email to Reuters.
- Young Nepalis had been pointing out on social media about the "luxurious lives of the families and children of corrupt politicians and civil servants" and the government reacted by banning social media platforms, the email said.
- KP Sharma Oli said he was saddened by the violent incidents due to the "infiltration from different selfish centres" but has not directly reacted to the claims of the protesters of corruption.

Last week, Oli’s government had put a ban on social media platforms, on grounds that the platforms had failed to register themselves with the government. Critics claim it was an attempt to curb free speech, a charge the Nepal government denied, citing use of social media to spread misinformation and commit fraud, among other claims.
Editor’s Note
- The Nepalese government had put a ban on social media platforms. But that decision backfired as the youth of Nepal protested to revoke the ban. KP Sharma Oli had to resign from his position following the violent protests. The former Nepal PM plans to flee the country. As things seem, the youth’s poignant question on the government’s inadequacy in tackling corruption and boosting economic opportunities seems unanswered.
