What is La Nina and how will it affect winter temperatures?

  • Monsoon will soon be ending and India will be ready to welcome winter.
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently announced that the monsoon is set to withdraw by 15th September in certain parts of the country.
  • The weather is set to be influenced by a climate phenomenon called La Nina.
  • La Nina means cold climate. It is also referred to as the cold phase of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle.
  • According to the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, La Nina is characterized by unusually cold temperatures in the ocean in the Equatorial Pacific, compared to El Nino, which is characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the ocean in the Equatorial Pacific.
  • Originally, the term was linked to Christmas and was used for the tendency of the phenomenon to arrive around this winter festival. El Nino means “The Little Boy” or “Christ child in Spanish,” stated the PMEL website.

Who discovered the phenomenon first?

  • The phenomenon was first discovered by fishermen off the coast of South America as the appearance of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean, occurring near the beginning of the year.
  • According to reports by Reuters, this weather event is also linked to floods and drought.
  • Opposite to this is the El Nino, which is the warm phase of El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

How will La Nina impact winter in India?

  • In a statement issued earlier this September, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stated La Nina may return to affect weather and climate patterns this month onwards.
  • However, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) pointed out that the global temperatures are still expected to remain above average for major countries in spite of the temporary cooling effect of this phenomenon.
  • For India, La Nina will bring colder winter, especially in the northern part of India.
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that this weather pattern, that cools the Pacific Ocean, is linked to more frost and intense cold waves in the northern part of India.

Editor’s Note

  • As the cold wave due to the phenomenon called La Nina approaches the Indian subcontinent, people need to brace for a colder winter this time after Diwali. With the temporary cooling effect of La Nina, the northern part of India will face colder winter, more frost, and intense cold waves. It will be interesting to see how the Indian government prepares for this cold wave.
