The family spat

Captain Angshuman Singh was inducted in the Army Medical Corps in 2020 and he joined 26 Punjab Regiment as medical officer for the Chandan Complex in Siachen glacier. J19th July 2023 witnessed a major fire breakout where the captain rescued lives of his fellow commanders. Sadly, when he rushed to the medical investigation room which was already drowned in fire, Angshuman, after putting up a brave frontier, breathed his last.
On 5th July, 2024, the President venerated the martyred Captain’s family with Kirti Chakra as an ode to the soldier’s resolve towards his duties in protecting his fellow comrades at the border.
President Droupadi Murmu handed over the Kirti Chakra, Angshuman’s photo album, clothes and other memories to his wife, Smriti Singh.
And this very gesture, sparked a bitter family feud amongst the parents of the soldier. They have accused the young widow of now allowing the family to touch the medal or his belongings.
Not only that, Smriti is also indicted of taking the medal to Gurdaspur and changing the permanent address on her documents to her home in Gurdaspur.

Revision of ‘Next of Kin’ Policy

In an interview to ANI, Manju Singh, mother of Angshuman Singh lamented ‘Ma ki dard mapa nahi ja sakta!’
The dard made Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh, the late officer’s parents seek transformation of Indian Army’s ‘Next of Kin’ (NoK) policy. This army program essays the distribution of financial assistance to families at the wake of an army personnel’s demise.
The family explained that the marriage was just 5-months old and the wife who received the gallantry award where the parents are also co-recipients do not have the medal or any other belongings of their son in possession except a photo on the wall.
Therefore, both Ravi Pratap and Manju Singh had demanded that the definition of Nok whould make it compulsory for the wife to stay with the parents.
The grieving family feels this change will save several other families meeting their situation from this lifelong grief.

Army sources responded to the family’s allegations that the Army Group Insurance Fund of INR 1 crore was split between his parents and wife while the wife is liable directly to the pension.
Apart from Army Group Insurance, the deceased family will receive INR 50 lakh in aid divided as INR 35 lakh to Smriti Singh and INR 15 lakh to his parents, as declared by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Human psychology is difficult to decipher. Angshuman Singh’s father himself is a Junio Commissioned Officer in the Army and a pensioner himself. Smriti Singh is receiving benefits as per the law applicable for a deceased soldier’s spouse. Not only that, she was mentioned in the will and the any form of debate should have ended there as respect to the will of the dead soul.
