The government of Maharashtra is finally successful in starting the process of redeveloping this region and making it ‘Navi Dharavi’. This project is going to be done by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture of Adani Group and the Maharashtra Government. There will be a division of 80% and 20% equity, respectively.

    Rehabilitation to run obstacle free

  • Mr. Gautam Adani said ‘What their homes do not have now, we will provide.’’ to the Asia’s biggest and the world's third-largest slum.
  • USD 3 billion project is scheduled to be completed in seven years.
  • Tahe project development agenda is yet to be approved by the State government, the project will provide upskilling opportunities, vocational training, and education initiatives that are expected to open up new employment avenues for the residents.
  • DRPPL stated the tax refund that eligible commercial units in the area will receive in the form of a refund of State Goods and Services Tax for five years.
  • DRPPL exempted the stamp duty payable on the first sale of commercial properties.
  • The residents of Dharavi will be rehabilitated into new housing societies where they will get flats with a carpet area of 350 square feet, a kitchen, and separate toilets. These flats are 17% more spacious than the usual flats given in redevelopment projects.
  • Finest minds have been roped in for redevelopment. Architect Hafeez Contractor will be working with UK’s consultancy firm Buro Happold and US-based design firm Sasaki, as well as experts from Singapore for this project.
  • Editor’s Note

Lingering since 2004 and witnessing scores of developers withdrew after winning bids, finally Adani Group took up the challenge of revamping Asia’s biggest slum. Not only population and poverty, these one million communities represent cultural hues, entrepreneurial spirit and resilience. Resients who rummaged through piles of garbage and picks plastic bottles to recycle them in the crammed lanes might now get to boast of their address.
