    BCI WORRIED

  • The Bar Council of India has written to all university Vice Chancellors urging them to conduct thorough inspections before granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new legal education centres. The BCI noted that while they play a regulatory role, universities and government bodies must also be actively.
  • BCI has told SC that almost 90% of government run law colleges lack faculty and in law colleges lack infrastructure.
  • Noting that the standard of legal profession has a direct bearing with the standard of law teaching, the regulator of legal education and profession said state governments were recklessly granting ‘No Objection Certificates’ (NOCs) to universities without examining their infrastructure.
  • The BCI said it has earmarked around 500 law colleges across which were sub-standard/below standard and a team led by some former judges/senior advocates; noted academicians would conduct surprise visits of such institutions.
  • The BCI said it was considering asking senior advocates or lawyers having 25 years of standing at the Bar to engage at least five young lawyers as juniors in their chambers
  • Gradual Change

  • Faculty does not excel in the specific subjects that they teach without any specialization on law subjects
  • Fee structure is very high if compared to teaching method in law.
  • Teachers don’t excel in the specific subjects that they teach. They just take lectures and complete their classes
  • Communication has been the biggest problem in the law education for students.
  • Having said that, Infrastructure in colleges have been improved to a high extent specifically in the new and private colleges if compared with the old colleges. Nowadays, students are getting more exposure in terms of internships, courts visit etc. Students are updated with the current scenario. They are more hi-tech and advanced.
  • Editor’s Note

Arjun Ram Meghwal sworn as the Minister of Law and Justice in India feels that the first duty of society in justice and with his able leadership, the Indian Judiciary will iron out the setbacks.
