    Bombay High Court distressed

  • Bombay High Court was distressed to witness Mumbai local commuters forced to travel like hurdled cattle while most of them hanging lose from the compartment doors.
  • PTI sources stated, in 2023, 2590 passengers died on tracks. 2441 commuters were injured during the same period while 1650 people were killed in accidents on the Central Railway route.
  • The HC called for immediate action on the matter terming this as ‘very serious issue.’ This happen while HC was hearing a Public Interest Litigation on the increasing number of deaths caused due to falling from over crowded trains. The PIL was filed by Yatin Jhadav.
  • A division bench of Chief Justice D.K.Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar held the Central and Western Railways officials responsible for this grievous situation. It instructed the general mangers of the Western and Central Railways to investigate the matter and file affidavits in response which are to be personally vetted by them.
  • Advocate Suresh Kumar, appearing for the Western Railway, said it was taking measures such as putting up barricades between tracks and construction of two or three foot-over-bridges at every station. The WR has implemented HC directions passed in a previous PIL.
  • Tough Stand Taken

  • The High Court remained heard-wearing that an immediate solution has to be put in place. The bench went on to ridicule the railways saying they cannot remain happy just be ferrying 35 lakh people daily which is a nominal number in comparison to the massive population of the city.
  • Bombay High Court mentioned specifically that the thought process of the officers has to be transformed first and then only change can be brought about.
  • Highest-ranking officials will have to push themselves beyond their comfort level to fix the pathetic condition of local commutation.
  • Mumbai’s Lifeline has another face too!

  • Mumbai's local trains are the lifeline of the city. Carrying more than eight million people a day, it is impossible to imagine the city without its trains. They feature in documentaries, advertisements and even Bollywood movies. But travelling on them is a whole other experience, not necessarily for the faint of heart.
  • Unlike commuters in most other cities and countries, where travellers are often engrossed in their phones, commuters on Mumbai's local trains, over time, strike up conversations and build relationships. Given that they see each other every day for hours at a time, such relationships are in a way, inevitable.
  • It is not uncommon to find groups of commuters singing their favourite Bollywood songs or playing cards as they wile away the time. In the ladies’ compartment a coach reserved for women many celebrate birthdays by passing around cake. Groups of men in the general compartment are also known to sing spiritual songs using small hand cymbals called manjiras.
  • Gossip is common, and almost nothing is off the table. People discuss their in-laws, moan about office politics and share salacious Bollywood stories.
  • If you observe the coaches you will find somebody cutting vegetables for the evening meal, somebody trying to finish sewing before reaching destination or somebody finishing the last call to the friend before reaching home, the Mumbai local is a myriad of emotions.
  • Editor’s Note

It is about time Mumbai’s lifeline to be infused with fresh blood for safer and smoother operation. The city will turn defunct if the locals do not operate a single day hence the authorities must be genuinely concerned with the improvement. Lives and livelihoods are in the hands of the administrative department and they should act with precision and humanity for sure.
